On or about April 1, 2006, Washington Mutual Bank, 800-788-7000, froze
the account of a 77-year-old man (wait 'tl you hear why), veteran,
father-of-seven, who suffers from diabetes, high blood pressure, and other
ailments, and who has undergone operations on his back, neck, and legs
in recent months.
According to Washington Mutual (recorded remarks), the elderly man's
account (of just over $20,000) was frozen because bseveral months ago, he
deposited a check in the amount of $4,900. from a young man who
purchased his car. (The elderly man needed the money to pay for his wife's
funeral.) The check cleared and the funds sat in the elderly man's
Washington Mutual account for many weeks thereafter.
But, apparently, the maker of the check subsequently incurred a debt
with his bank (not Washington Mutual), and, at the request of his bank,
Washington Mutual froze all funds in the poor elderly man's account
(despite the fact that the money in question had cleared long before), and
intends to hold it until they decide whether or not they can legally
reimburse the young man's bank with cleared funds from the elderly man's
life savings.
As a result, the man was stranded, is going without adequate food, and
his health is deteriorating. In short, Washington Mutual Bank sucks,
and they are now killing a poor older gentleman.
